Cutler, Draft, and Schedule - Random Thoughts from My Day
We're deep into the Bears offseason, but there has just been so much in the way of Bears news lately that I felt I should pop in and say hello.
First things first - Jay Cutler.
For the record, I don't think he's a head-case. All the drama in Denver, well, I'm blaming that on altitude sickness. You ever watch a Denver home game on TV? By the 4th quarter, everyone on the bench is sucking oxygen from a tank. That's no way to play football.
I can't say I blame the man for wanting out. And frankly, if a team were considering Matt Cassel my superior, I think I'd be a bit miffed, too. We'll compare the Bears record to the Chiefs record at the end of the year for the final decision, but I'm leaning heavily toward da Bears.
Meanwhile, the Kyle Orton experience heads to the Mile High city, our perplexed Rex is a free agent who (likely) leaves town, leaving our #2 QB spot to...Caleb Hanie!! I, of course, continue my man-crush on the gun-slinging ex-Colorado-State-Ram, but that doesn't mean that Cutler won't cure me of that.
The draft has come and gone, and with the big picks traded away for the new QB, there wasn't a whole lot of headlines here. We did pick up a couple of receivers, which is a very good thing. Let's just hope that in our crowd of ball-catchers that we have someone who is threat enough to make Devin a BIIIIIIGGGG threat.
And finally, the Bears schedule for 2009 is published now, which is good news for people who need to plan out 40 chilies. If you haven't seen it yet, we have the AFC North (with Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh in week 2) and the NFC West (for the other half of the Super Bowl matchup - but otherwise, yawn). This plus the Falcons and Eagles again, as well as our usual NFC North suspects. Not sure what to make of it all yet, but thankfully the Bengals match-up is in Cincy (because we already have enough crime in these parts).
Just a few months til training camp!
